I’ve heard other people say that they don’t care what other people think about what they do or how they live their lives.
“They don’t pay my bills!” is often what I get in response when I ask, “but what would people think about this or that?” I know they don’t pay our bills, but we live in a society, we don’t live in a deserted island.
I have to say, that I DO care. I don’t want people to think that I am what I’m not.
Take for example an ex coworker. She was single, but always had a lot of male friends… nothing wrong with that, usually I also have more male friends than female friends. But in her case, she let her male friends spend the night at her home… one day was one, the other day was another.
She said she didn’t care what the world said because she was clear that there was nothing going on, they slept in the sofa while she slept in her bedroom, but even I didn’t see it with good eyes.
Keeping a clean reputation is important, both in business and in life, if someone even doubts about your reputation you could lose on many opportunities. You could be treated differently and you would not be taken seriously.
When I discovered MySpace years ago, I accepted all friends requests, and one day this guy who always sent me nice comments and messages changed his layout and the new layout had a “drugs and firearms” motive. I immediately blocked him. He sent me a message asking if he had offended me with one of the emails and if so, to forgive him.
I told him that he was always respectful and nice to me, but I didn’t approve neither drugs or firearms so I didn’t want to link to his profile anymore. Again, he was very nice and understanding, maybe he just thought it was a “cool layout”, maybe he really was into those things, I will never know.
But I immediately thought about what would other people think of me if they see this guy as one of “my friends”? I already had been in business online for couple of years and I certainly didn’t want to lose credibility and customers because of that.
Now, do you care about what other people think?
